Prominent Cybercrimes and Their Penalties

1. Electronic Fraud

  • Description: Seizing the funds of others through electronic means.
  • Penalty: Imprisonment for a period of not less than one year and a fine of not less than AED 250,000 and not more than AED 1,000,000, or one of these two penalties.

2. Electronic Blackmail

  • Description: Threatening a person to publish private information or photos to force them to do something.
  • Penalty: Imprisonment for a period not exceeding two years and a fine of not less than AED 250,000 and not more than AED 500,000.

3. Electronic Defamation and Slander

  • Description: Insulting a person through social media or email.
  • Penalty: Imprisonment and a fine of not less than AED 250,000 and not more than AED 500,000.

4. Hacking of Information Systems

  • Description: Unauthorized access to electronic sites or systems.
  • Penalty: Imprisonment and a fine of not less than AED 100,000 and not more than AED 300,000.

5. Spreading Rumors

  • Description: Spreading false or misleading news via the internet.
  • Penalty: Temporary imprisonment and a fine of not less than AED 100,000 and not more than AED 1,000,000.

6. Violation of Privacy

  • Description: Taking pictures or recording conversations without permission.
  • Penalty: Imprisonment for a period of not less than 6 months and a fine of not less than AED 150,000 and not more than AED 500,000.

How to Protect Yourself from Cybercrime

For Individuals

  • Do not share your personal information with untrusted sources.
  • Use strong and different passwords for each account.
  • Enable two-factor authentication on all your accounts.
  • Do not open suspicious links or attachments.
  • Beware of exaggerated investment offers.

For Companies

  • Implement strict information security policies.
  • Train employees to recognize fraud attempts.
  • Use advanced and updated protection systems.
  • Conduct periodic security checks.

What to Do If You Are a Victim?

  1. Do not respond to the blackmailer or fraudster.
  2. Keep the evidence: screenshots, messages, recordings.
  3. Report to the competent authorities: Abu Dhabi Police (8002626), Dubai Police (901), or through the "Aman" application.
  4. Consult a lawyer specializing in cybercrime.
